Through a sleepy mountain town
There was a girl there with long brown hair
I swear, her voice made a sound

It was like a fiddle crying
For the world to ease on up
Because the land she was in
was so many miles from home

And left her wanting to say:

I just got back from across the state
Out where the Monongahela
Spits and crashes through the mountain passes
And rust runs through the blood

Of old hill folk who were born in the rain
And beaten with dreams of Ohio,
Out where faces mirror scenery--
All them weathered, jagged, ridge-faced boys...
Yet still they remain

We had but one night together
She laughed and called me some names
“A drunk,” was one but the two of us
Made out like bandits on cocaine

Because they know their spree is ending
The pigs are beatin down the door
